In NZ!

I had an amazing time in Fiji and am sad to leave, but I also learned quite a few things:

Coral bleaching:

Algae lives is responsible for giving coral it’s color. When things stress the algae out,(like high temps) it releases substances that harm the coral, so coral then kills the algae which makes the coral lose it’s colour. A coral can recover if the conditions improve again.

Fiji school system:

In grade (year) 8, the Fijian kids take exams that determine whether or not they get into high school. Because of this, it is very common at some schools for the kids to live at the school with their teachers the month before their exams. This is because it is such a far walk from their house to school, so it gives all kids an equal opportunity to study and learn.

The grocery store here is very interesting. Milk and eggs aren’t stored in the fridge, and there is no decaf coffee. We also found out that the cereal selection is very tiny, and when we went shopping for cereal, the boxes were open already!

The food is typically very spicy, and the houses are all flat roofs and all single story incase a hurricane comes. Houses are easier to push down when they are tall.

Yesterday we went on a boat ride to an island and watched Fijian dancing, fire dancing, and fire walking! How long do you think they had to prep for that? Answer the question in the comments. There was a LOT of seaweed in the water, and I found 10 sand dollars! They were about the size of a nickel, and there were also ones that were smaller than a dime! We didn’t take any, and were respectful and put them back.

    2. In one sentence you discussed spicy food and hurricanes. "The food is typically very spicy, and the houses are all flat roofs and all single story incase a hurricane comes." We were wondering if the two thoughts were linked and that is why it was the same sentence.
