In Bali, Indonesia

Hello! I am very sorry that I haven’t been posting, as I have been busy with science fair. I got in Indonesia about a week ago and have had some fun adventures since then. I went to a cooking class, and made 5 meals. Everything was so clean and it was super fun going into the garden and picking our vegetables. Did you know that in most of the world you can’t flush toilet paper? There is a garbage can beside the toilet to put it in. I did batik painting for the first time and it was super fun! First, you will pick a design that you want. There are about 30 designs drawn on separate sheets of paper. Then, after you have the design picked out, you will trace it on fabric with pencil. After it is all traced, you will re-trace it with hot wax. If you are a kid the instructor will do it for you, and it you are an adult you will do it yourself. After it is traced with the wax, now it is time to paint with watercolour! Once you are done painting, it will sit to dry for 10 mins. The instructors will then put the fabric into a sealing mixture for the colour, then really hot water to melt the wax and give it a white outline. Then they will then wash it in cold water so that it isn’t too hot to touch, then they will let it dry. After 30 mins, you can take it home! Funny story- I was sitting on the toilet at night when a huge bug with giant wings flew in and started hopping around! I scrambled out of there and tripped over my own feet trying to get upstairs! In Bali, most of the bathrooms are outdoor so bugs get in a lot. There are also a bunch of chip flavours that you can’t find in Canada!

Here are some photos:

  1. Wow! The art looks really cool, I wonder who came up with using the wax to make a white outline. Also the chip flavours look… interesting…
